Day 226-227 - Kalbarri Round 2

We left Gladstone beach and started the drive to Kalbarri, after driving the 10km from the campsite on a "gravel" (more like compacted mud) road we reached the main road and Joanna took over. It was a broadly uneventful drive being a typical Australia long straight and red, although as we travel south the landscape gets less red and less sparse. We stopped off at a view point, this made the land around towards the coast look like it may have been an old lake bed.

We stopped to have lunch on the way, with lots of fly's around, this would be the last destination where this was a major problem. We arrived in Kalbarri and had a walk around town again before checking into our campsite. This was Big River ranch which we stayed in on the journey up north, this time around we were booked in for three nights. With the tent up we went to Kalbarri Anglican church for their contemporary evening service, this was a select affair with ourselves, the minister and his wife, another family on holiday and a member of the regular congregation. Like in the Whitsundays a large amount of the congregation is often tourists or seasonally transient, remember the population of Kalbarri is only ~1300.

The next day we got up and went to the pelican feeding that happens every morning in Kalbarri. Joanna even got the chance to feed one.

Here's a video of Joanna feeding a Pelican

After the Pelicans we had a look around the market in Kilbarri, this was a good excuse to top up on second hand books. We also popped into the visitor centre to see what else there was in the area, we had been under the presumption that we couldn't access Kilbari National part with a 2WD vehicle; fortunately we were wrong so after putting a wash on at the campsite we headed up to Natures window in the national park.

We then headed to another lookout and had a short walk down to the river.

In the evening we headed to the beach to enjoy a west coast sunset.

Tomorrow we're canoeing the Murchison River.
