Day 216 - Exmouth Day 1

We were staying in Bullara station. This was an old sheep station, it now does cattle. Situated an hour south of Exmouth, and 50 minutes north of Coral Bay, it appeals to Australians on holiday and the grey nomads, who come along in their 4X4 pick ups towing their caravans. We got a few laughs in our little hatchback, and a neighbour had to lend us some rock pegs to get the tent up!

In the mornings they have a little cafe that does some excellent tea and scones. Whilst we were having tea, there was a sudden downpour of rain. The most rain that there had been for about 12 months.

After checking that our tent had survived, we drove to Exmouth. This was a typical Western Australian road, with the additional interest of huge termite mounds littering the landscape.

One of the major tours available at this time of year, is the whale shark migration. The tours allow you to snorkel with them. Unfortunately, our excellent timing meant that we had arrived at the start of the school holidays, so these tours were completely booked out. Instead we booked our self's onto a Sea kayaking/ Snorkeling tour and a separate snorkeling tour.

As it was getting on in the afternoon, we didn't drive round as far as the Cape Range National Park, instead we went to some of the nearer beaches.

The first beach that we came to had the wreck of SS Mildura which was caught on the reef in 1907. It sat there until it was used for bombing practice by WW2 aircraft.

The second beach was pretty exciting! Along the beach were bits of coral that had broken off the reef at some point and been washed up onto the beach. As we don’t usually have a camera with us whilst snorkelling, this is a great way to show you some of the things that we have seen.

We dove as far as the Vlaming Head Lighthouse when we saw the rain cloud approaching. As there had been some road flooding on the way into Exmouth, we decided to head back to Bullara before it got any worse.

Until Next Time :)
