Days 176-177 Koalas!!

Near our campsite is a small island called Raymond island. This as become famous has a koala reserve.

It is accessed by a small ferry that crosses the 200m distance to the island. It is $13 for a car, or free for foot passengers, so we left the car on the mainland.

The island is home to fewer than 500 people, but seems to be popular for bike rides, walks and of course koalas.

In 1953 Koalas were relocated to the island for conservation purposes, they have thrived so well that the hormonal treatment and vasectomies are undertaken on a number to keep the number of koalas under manageable control.

There is a 'Koala trail' of just over 1km that goes around the island where the koalas are likely to be found, providing interesting facts along the way.

Did you know - Koalas eat up to a kilogram a day, and sleep for about 18 hours. My new life ambition is to be a Koala!

After getting the ferry back to the mainland we wandered through a farmers market before making our way to Lakes Entrance.

We had done a lot of traveling over the previous few days and we were feeling pretty tired, so we set up camp early and spent the afternoon sorting things out and planning. There is a little bit of concern that to reach Cairns in time, we need to travel an average of 100km a day.

On Sunday morning we headed to church. It was about 14 degrees, but with a warm sun we had soon removed our jumpers. As soon as we walked into church, we quickly realised that everyone else was wearing jumpers and the heating was on!

After Church we wandered around Lakes Entrance and treated ourselves to fish and chips! :)

On the menu was Gummy Shark also known as 'flake'. So there you go, we have eaten shark. It was very nice, a meatier texture than fish.

A stop-off on our drive to stretch our legs!

The afternoon was just spent driving and we arrived in Mallacoota just as the sun was setting.

Love
