Day 174-175 Wilson's Promontory

Drive to Wilson’s Prom and Mt Bishop

The weather forecast was looking to be a bit dubious but we set of early and drove to Wilson’s promontory. This is a national park, known for its mountains, beaches and wildlife.

Once in the park we went on a wildlife walk, this was a couple of kilometers through some native bush-land. We did really well! :) We saw lots of kangaroos and emu’s, and we also got our first sighting of a wombat!!

A Kangaroo having a wash - all them are tagged as part of ongoing research.

Can you spot him?

This! Is a Wombat

Interesting fact, like apparently most Australian mammals, wombats have a pouch. However, as they are burrowing animals the pouch is rotated 180 degrees to stop it from being filled with dirt when digging!

We drove deeper into the park and went for a shortish nature walk, thankfully this one was in the shade so a lot cooler.

Some of the views driving through the promontory

There is only one camping ground within the national park, and unfortunately this comes with a very high price tag, but we didn’t want to risk the weather through the delay that driving in and out of the park would cause.

That evening, after making sure that our food was safely locked in the car, after a wombat wandered into our tent porch, we headed to bed for an early night.

There was a terrific thunderstorm during the night, but when we dragged ourselves out of bed early the next morning, it was a beautiful start to the day.

Our plan was to climb Mt Bishop, only about 350m high, the walk was connected by another track from the campsite, all in all a just under 10k walk. It was a good, challenging but not difficult. The view from the top gave us a good look over the Promontory.

We raced the rain clouds down, although thankfully there was only a shower.

After packing up the tent, we started on a long drive. The route broken up by pelican spotting, and an interesting looking swing bridge.

Until next time!
